DELIVERING FOR THE VALLEY

In her first term, Dr. Bains hit the ground running, winning $21 million for a new police station in Wasco and new funding for McFarland’s police station. She secured $11 million to fight the fentanyl crisis, establishing the Fentanyl Addiction and Overdose Prevention Task Force to fight fentanyl abuse and combat drug trafficking, and co-authored a new law increasing penalties for the sex trafficking of children. Dr. Bains fought for and won $2.8 million to rehabilitate Kern County’s parks, upgrade aging equipment and clean up graffiti so that families can be outside, play sports and enjoy picnics. Working with the Kern County Community College District, Dr. Bains brought home $1 million for an Economic Mobility Lab to prepare students for professions in business services, advanced manufacturing, and cyber security.

ON THE FRONTLINES

When the pandemic hit, Dr. Bains was on the frontlines, establishing field hospital sites to treat COVID patients. There she was shocked to see the U.S. healthcare system fail to provide basic medical necessities, spurring her mission to improve access to quality healthcare. She also has been a leader in researching and treating Valley Fever and serves as Board President of Kern Regional Center, which provides services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Bains has spearheaded landmark mental health and addiction treatment programs so that everyone gets the care they deserve.

CHAMPION FOR CHILDREN

Dr. Bains serves as a volunteer with an organization dedicated to combating human trafficking and child abuse, on the San Joaquin Valley Air District’s Environmental Justice Advisory group, working to improve our Valley’s air and water quality and on the Taft College Foundation, fighting to expand access to higher education. Dr. Bains also mentors Valley youth through a pipeline program she helped develop to support those interested in a healthcare career. She wants to ensure we build a post-pandemic world where our children are safe, healthy and have opportunities to succeed.

UPLIFTING COMMUNITIES

The daughter of immigrant parents from India, Dr. Bains grew up in in the Valley. She watched her father build a business, starting as an auto mechanic and ultimately owning successful car dealerships. After college, Jasmeet worked with her father before pursuing her career in medicine. Dr. Bains is deeply committed to supporting our local Valley businesses so they can thrive while creating good paying jobs that provide a living wage, retirement security and healthcare coverage, which Jasmeet believes is key to enhancing public health in the Valley.

DEEP VALLEY ROOTS

After graduating from medical school, Jasmeet returned home and completed her residency at Clinica Sierra Vista in Kern County, choosing to work in underserved healthcare settings to increase access to healthcare. Today, she serves as Medical Director at Bakersfield Recovery Services overseeing substance abuse, addiction, and mental health rehabilitation. She was appointed by then Governor Brown to the California Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission and was awarded the 2019 Hero of Family Medicine by the California Academy of Family Physicians, and the 2021 Beautiful Bakersfield Award from the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce.
