DELANO, CA — Dr. Jasmeet Bains, a family physician and candidate for California’s 22nd Congressional District, was featured in USA Today as part of a growing wave of doctors running for Congress, after Rep. David Valadao voted to cut Medicaid and jeopardize health care access across the Central Valley.
The article highlights the severe impact these cuts have in Valadao’s own district, where thousands rely on Medicaid for lifesaving care: “The law, which Valadao initially pledged not to support, is expected to strip health insurance from millions of low-income Californians, including nearly 290,000 residents in his rural farming Central Valley district…”
After dodging questions for months, Valadao “did not respond to a request for…comment.”
Dr. Bains called out Valadao’s broken promises:
“‘In the Valley, your word is your bond. Going back on your word is the biggest slap in the face that you can give to a community, especially a vulnerable community like this…I had full faith that he would do the right thing and stand up for the district. But he didn't.”
She also emphasized the importance of sending rural Medicaid doctors to Congress:
"You'll get a very different perception of what needs to be done to strengthen health care…A lot of times people have ideas of healthcare, but if you don't have the expert that's actually worked in those areas that need it most, you're not going to create a program that's effective."
As a practicing physician, Dr. Bains is running to hold David Valadao accountable for his broken promises on health care. After repeatedly pledging not to gut Medicaid, Valadao cast the deciding vote for the largest cut to Medicaid in history – ripping away coverage from over 68,000 in CA-22 and triggering up to $128 billion in cuts to California health systems.
Valadao represents more Medicaid recipients than any House Republican who voted for the Big, Beautiful Bill. After voting to endanger the Affordable Care Act in 2018, Valadao lost his seat in Congress.
